Obituary of Evelyn Hulda Hoffman

Peacefully on Saturday, November 26th 2016, with family by her side, The Lord took home our sister, aunt and great aunt. She was predeceased by her husband Jule on March 29th 1965, as well as brothers Benny, Bill, Harry and sister Lorraine Kallert. Left to mourn are her sisters Lily Kilbrie, Irene Schwark (Jack), Ruth Topnik (Lawrence), as well as nephews, nieces, great nephews , great nieces and many close friends and family. Also left to mourn her passing are sister-in-laws, Irene Wittmeier and Lilly Wittmeier. Evelyn was born in Thalberg, Manitoba to Adolf and Hulda Wittmeier. She grew up on the family farm with her 7 siblings and enjoyed picking berries, making jam and baking. After leaving the family farm, Evelyn worked for many families as a live in nanny and housekeeper. On June 29th 1946 at the age of 23, Evelyn married the love of her life Jule Hoffman of Morris whom she met through mutual friends. Evelyn and Jule were known for going on picnics together, always enjoying chicken and a homemade apple pie made by Evelyn. In her mid 20’s, Evelyn continued in her working career forming a lifelong bond with The Asowitch family. Although Evelyn would never have children of her own, Evelyn & Penny (Asowitch) would refer to ‘Big Evelyn’ as their second mother. Evelyn would spend nearly a decade and a half caring and tending to the family. For almost 10 years, Evelyn was employed as a seasonal worker for Eaton’s Mail Order, where, she packed and shipped parcels for customers and often remarked about the funny names she found on the shipping labels. In her later years, Evelyn always enjoyed visits from family members and always made sure tummys were full and bags were sent home full of goodies. She was very generous and always a strong role model for the women in her family, often encouraging other to see things her way. Evelyn was always the first one to giggle at jokes and always had a smile on her face. Evelyn’s smile and humor will be greatly missed. “God may have you in his keeping, but we have you in our hearts." The family would like to thank the staff at Red River Lodge in Morris for their kind and compassionate care for Evelyn during her time there. A celebration of Evelyn’s life will take place on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 162 Railroad Avenue West, Morris, MB. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Red River Valley Lodge in Morris, Manitoba.
