Eulogy
On April 21, 1927, Marie and Albert Breton rejoiced in the birth of their first child, whom they named Lorraine. The family home was in Letellier Manitoba where Lorraine lived till she married. Her true love was Laurent Delorme. They exchanged vows in 1947 and moved to St. Joseph, Manitoba where they farmed and raised their five children: Brunel, Carol, Paul, Mona and Rene.
It was a hard life and money did not come easily. To help make ends meet, Mom learned to sew and made her children's clothing, which were then handed down from the eldest to the youngest. This was good news for Brunel and Carol, but somewhat sad for Rene as he was the baby of the family and some of the clothes were wearing thin.
Mom had a huge garden that needed to be tilled, seeded and weeded and come August, she would then spend several months picking the crop and preserving the harvest for the winter months. With very limited free time, she still managed to help research and proof read a book for publishing on the history of St Joseph. She also became the first Avon lady in the area. Her door was always open and ready to receive and help the surrounding families.
Eventually the farm was sold and the family moved to St. Norbert where she worked several years as the school secretary. Her need to learn was incredible and self-taught herself many things. She had incredible problem solving skills. She could adapt almost anything to make it useable again. She was MacGyvering things before it became a hit on TV. She was doing the 3R'S before the bins were invented: reuse, repurpose, recycle. She always found time to give her services as a volunteer. She also loved to attend Brunel's hockey and baseball games and if truth be told, she was his greatest fan.
Besides becoming quite adept with her sewing skills, she enjoyed many hobbies and loved to drag Carol to the workshops. To mention a few... crochet, knitting, macramé, needle point, paper tole and origami. She had a green thumb and could make any plant flourish. She was always looking for old coins to add to her collection. She loved crossword puzzles, the harder to solve the better, dancing, playing cards, playing Scrabble and Wheel of Fortune on her computer and spending time with her grandchildren. Her desire to learn was unending.
In 1981, Mom became one of the founders of the Eagles Club in St Norbert and volunteered many, many hours as treasurer and secretary. To add to her many achievements, Mom became one of the top track and field officials for Canada.
In October 1989, following a lengthy illness, as there was no longer any hope she made the difficult decision to discontinue life supports for her dear Laurent.
In 2011, her heart was ripped to pieces again, when she lost her son Paul to complications from MS.
Mom was not only meticulous with what she made, but order and cleanliness were a must to her surroundings and to her personal being. She encouraged Mona to take a hairdressing course which she then benefited from with many new hairstyles. Of all her children, Mona is her dark haired spitting image.
Lorraine remained active and young at heart, but the family started to notice lapses of memory. As time passed she was eventually diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia and could no longer care for herself.
In October 2013, she was panelled and moved to Action Marguerite St Vital. What the family found the most remarkable was her ability to accept this journey that she must make.
As her dementia progressed, she not only lost her many talents but she became more and more debilitated. This terrible disease not only stole her gifts and memory, but what was most difficult for her children was the loss of her engaging spirit.
Brunel, Mona, Suzanne, Dan and myself, are indebted to Carol and Rene who dedicated so much of their love and time for her. Mom chose Carol as her Power Of Attorney and could not have made a better decision. Carol not only assured that her needs were met but that her dignity was maintained. Carol was a true advocate for her, and at times for the other residents as well. For this we will always be grateful.
The family would also like to thank Yvonne who lovingly took care of Mom when Carol was recovery from a surgery.
Mom continues to live in our hearts and in our cherished memories of her. She leaves 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren
Lorraine carried her crosses with humility, grace, dignity and acceptance. May she now rest in peace.
We love you and miss you Mom.
