Obituary of Emily Stege

Peacefully on January 24, 2016, Emily passed away at the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris, Manitoba at the age of 94 years. She is survived by three sons: Ronald (Ruth), their children: Rachel and Robert, Dale (Karen) and Terry (Jo-Ann); one daughter: Arleen Stege and her daughter Ashley; two brothers: August (Ruth) Berft of Winkler and Norman (Violet) Berft of Winnipeg; as well as many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband William Henry Stege in February of 1987. She was also predeceased by four sisters: Hanna (Emil Schultz), Olga (Bill Schultz), Helen (Bill Woltman) and Mabel (George Triggs); and one brother Rheinhard in infancy. “I, Emily, was born in Emerson and attended West Lynne and Emerson High School. After completing grade 10 I did not further my education as my ambition was to be a hairdresser. Coming from a fair sized family, financial means did not permit me to go on with education, so I went on doing “Domestic Engineering” until I met Will. I met Will in August, 1938. Our meeting was on a Saturday night when in those days everybody came to town shopping. We either hung around with the crowd in cars or crossed the border to St. Vincent for a drink-women were allowed in taverns there. We enjoyed fairs, shows, dances, great house parties and baseball games at Friedensthal (Uncle Louis’s place) and at Humboldt, Minnesota. Life was not as exciting or as fast a pace as is today. We were married December 4, 1943 in Emerson and farmed in Friedensthal, half a mile from Will’s folks until 1968 when we moved to Tolstoi, and continued with more farmland and cattle. Our hobbies were gardening, attending Ukrainian weddings, and later we enjoyed fishing and camping with our camper at Moose Lake. After a number of semi-retiring years, we rented out the land until Will’s death on February 27, 1987. I remained on the farm until 1992 when I sold and retired to Riverview Apartments in Morris. We have a family of three boys and one girl.” Emily moved to the Red River Valley Lodge in June, 2012 and lived there happily until her passing on the 24th of January, 2016. The funeral service for Emily Stege will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, in Morris, Manitoba at 2:00pm. A private family burial will take place prior to the funeral in Friedensthal Cemetery. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care which Emily received in the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris. Mom was so happy to be living at the lodge and could not say anything against the care and food she received there. She was well respected by all staff and residents and was so happy to be living there. Donations in Emily’s memory may be made to the Red River Valley Lodge (Box 507, Morris, MB R0G
