Obituary of Katherine Braun

We are sad to say that Mom passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023 at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 100. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Sandra Penner (Tony Valenta), Merelyn Hunkin (Colin), Grandson Aiden Hunkin (Katrina), Granddaughters, Dana McKee (Garrett), Devon Hunkin (Roly Furet) and Great Granddaughter Marrin McKee. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernhardt (Ben) Braun in 2011 and her brothers, Henry and Peter Giesbrecht. Kay was born at Lowe Farm in 1922 and married Ben in Banff, Alberta, where he was working in construction, before he served in the military in Europe during WWII. Kay and Ben owned a home in Lowe Farm, but lived in various Prairie communities when Ben worked on road and drainage construction. In later years, Ben was the Postmaster at Lowe Farm and Kay was his assistant. Kay took on the job of Postmaster after Ben retired. After Ben passed, she lived in Morris for a few years before moving to Portsmouth Retirement Residence in Winnipeg, where she remained until a few days before her passing. Kay was a member of several service clubs, Lowe Farm Women’s Institute, Morris Legion Auxiliary, the Eastern Star and UCW at Morris United Church. A brief internment service will be held at the Lowe Farm Cemetery on Tuesday, May 2nd at 2:00 pm, followed by a lunch at the Morris Baptist Church Auditorium, 220 Lucinda St S, Morris, Manitoba. Viewing will be on Sunday and Monday, April 30th and May 1st from 2 pm to 8 pm at the Morris Funeral Home, Morris, Manitoba. The family wishes to thank the staff at Portsmouth Retirement Residence, the JRTC Home Care ladies, the WRHA Palliative Care nurses, Dr. Dean and staff at the St Boniface Hospital. Thanks also to the Morris Funeral Home for their kind assistance. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Kay’s memory to a charity of your choice.
